Inside tips for choosing a quality bath oil and what’s in them
There’s nothing quite like slipping into a warm bath after a long day to relax and unwind. Taking a daily soak in the comfort of your bathtub with natural essential oils is the perfect way to maintain and improve your wellness throughout every season. Experience the healing powers of water (hydrotherapy). A bath, especially at bedtime, helps to relax tired, sore muscles and calm the mind. It prepares the body and mind for sleep by relieving tension and stress, while making a clear break between your active day and restful night. Give your bath a purpose and make it healthful by adding specific plants and herbs that will enhance your experience by delivering a therapeutic result.
Bath oils are dear to our hearts at BeautyProphet. Spa, herbal and European bath products have always been a part of our founding assortment. We’re here to share our inside tips for choosing a good, quality bath oil. For starters…
What’s in a bath oil?
A good, quality bath oil is formulated with natural plant essential oils in a base oil, usually lighter oils such as Almond, Jojoba, Grapeseed, Castor or even Olive oils. Depending on your aroma preference or desired wellness result, the essential oils will provide an aromatherapeutic experience, while the oils provide a way to deliver the essential oils from the bottle to the tub safely – plus they give you a bonus nourishing and hydrating boost while you soak. Some Bath Oils are oil based and others are more soluble in water. Both forms are moisture boosting and it is really a matter of preference. Some people with dry skin prefer an “oil” bath. Modern versions of bath oil work as a bathing ritual as well as a shower ritual. As we move away from the harmful effects of “soap” we realize that cleansing for body, can be accomplished with creamy textures as well as soapy, bubble textures. This has been true for facial cleansers for years.
Tip #1: Choose a bath oil with pure essential oils
The essential oils are the backbone for the bath oil experience. There are some beautiful blends as well as single note aromatherapy that provide an aromatherapeutic experience for our body and mind.
Tip #2: Be mindful of color
Be mindful in two ways – what the color is derived from and what the purpose of the color is for. Bath oils are often colored because it adds to the bathing experience- color therapy! Think about it- would you prefer to soak in a clear bath or a gentle shade of blue for deep relaxation? It might not be at top of mind, but psychologically, the blue color is sedating and calming to the mind.
Tip #3: Oils with multi-uses = you’re winning!
We love a good multi-use oil. Depending on the formula, an oil could be used for bath, body and/or shower. For example, if the product name is “Bath & Shower Oil” you can add the oil to your tub and soak or apply directly to your skin while showering. If the product name is “Bath & Body Oil”- same idea, in addition you can use it as a hydrator for your skin after the bath.
When you’re in need of a spa day try our splurge-worthy Bath Oils selected by the BeautyProphet herself:
My all-time favorite bath oil is the Kyoto Phyto-Aromatic Bath & Shower Oil from Cinq Mondes. This Bath oil formula was developed from an original Japanese bath ritual. It is a unique combination of Rose and Ginger essential oils, and its vivid green color is derived from Chlorophyll, so no fear, no nasties here! If you don’t have a time for a bath, you can apply it to wet skin when taking a shower. The oil turns into a milky emulsion on contact with water and it’s really a unique, aromatherapy experience! I also really enjoy the Wood Rejuvenation Bath & Body Oil from Elemental Herbology because its combination of Rosemary, Ho Leaf and Nutmeg are really soothing to the body after a long day. Plus, if you are active, it’s a great option to relieve muscle aches and invigorate a tired body. Its base oils are Almond, Jojoba and Peach Kernel which re-hydrate my skin when I use it as a Body Oil. Find it here >
